I’ve been on the fence about AI.
I love it, it helps me do things that I wouldn’t possibly take on, due to the complexity of the feature itself. I don’t like AI when it is forced up my throat (yes looking at the teachers that want me to use AI)
But on 21st of July, 9 before writing this, the Claude Pro subscription I was utilising ran out. I was a big advocater of GitHub Copilot due to how much more worth its subscription is as compared to others, but that is quite bad now (Students get $2 worth of tokens, as compared to the insane value of 300 prompts). I got a Claude sub thanks to a wonderful friend near the start of June.
I instantly felt the difference. The jump from GPT-5.3 Codex to Opus 4.8 (and even Sonnet 4.5) was very noticeable. I even managed to use fabled Fable when it was first released. It helped me do really amazing stuff, like implementing the Kitty Drag and Drop Protocol on a framework that shouldn’t even support it (Textual)
It also helped me create a proper cross-platform trash handler in python, something that was rust-only for some time trash-rs
But all good things come to an end, the sub ran out. And I was left. That’s when I realised, this is what will happen.
This is what will happen when the AI bubble bursts. This is why people still spend thousands of dollars, because it makes them feel productive, and once it runs out, it makes them feel the addiction, the adrenaline. It’s a drug, just really subsidized for now.
I now have a Codex subscription thanks to my Dad, but within the week that I didn’t have access to a proper AI coding model, it just felt weird, slow, nothing to look forward.
I can’t say for everyone else, I will feel this way again in about 8 months, when I eventually enter the Army as part of Singapore’s compulsory military training. But I hope that you spend what you can afford, rather than going all in on something that may not even work out.
